Case Study: OpenMi Accessibility App Video Production
The OpenMi project brought together ACE, Werribee Open Range Zoo and the Victorian Deaf Education Institute to create a smartphone application designed for deaf and hearing-impaired students. Their goal was to give visitors an inclusive way to enjoy the zoo experience through location-based prompts, visual cues and interactive content.
The team needed a clear and engaging video to launch the app and demonstrate how it worked. They wanted something accessible for a wide audience, including educators, parents and decision makers evaluating the technology.

Client Background
ACE develops smart technology that improves communication and accessibility. For the OpenMi initiative, they collaborated with Werribee Open Range Zoo to test the system in a real environment. The Victorian Deaf Education Institute supported the learning and inclusion objectives behind the project.
The Challenge
- Explain the purpose of the app
- Show how it supports deaf students
- Demonstrate the technology without jargon
- Give a clear view of how it works at the zoo
- Provide a polished video for the launch event and ongoing presentations
The audience included schools, educators and accessibility teams. The video needed to be simple, warm and easy to follow.
Our Approach
Setting the scene
We opened with wide shots of Werribee Open Range Zoo to establish context immediately and show the real environment where the app is used.
Introducing the participants
We filmed students and educators interacting at the zoo. Short interviews and clear voiceover lines introduced the people involved and the intention behind the app.
Demonstrating the app
The core of the video is the demonstration. We captured:
- students using the phone
- location-based prompts in action
- visual cues on the screen
- the full process from start to finish
The footage shows every step of how the app guides the experience. The aim was complete clarity for viewers.
The Results
The video was used at the launch event and in ongoing presentations to schools, partners and potential adopters. It helped the client explain the technology in a way that felt simple and human. It also supported conversations with education teams who needed to see the app working in a real setting.
